How to Reduce Acid Reflux During Pregnancy (or any other time too!)

I have touted the uses of Apple Cider vinegar with the mother before  here on my blog. I think it’s an amazing healer!  I have since used it on blemishes on my face and they go away immediately as well as cold sores that also go away within 1 or 2 applications.  I can’t believe it!  It works so much better than over the counter medications I used to try.  In these instances, I use a q-tip to apply it to my skin to make sure it stays clean and sterile.

So, when I told my neighbor that I was having terrible issues with acid reflux during pregnancy (she is pregnant too), she told me about an instant help that is very effective in actually keeping it away and not just covering up the symptoms (like Tums does).  Let me tell you, I didn’t just have minor reflux…  I had a major problem with it.  I had it every day, multiple times per day and it hardly ever went away.  I couldn’t even drink water without getting acid in my throat.  I couldn’t lay down, I couldn’t sleep.  I was pretty much miserable because of it and it was causing other digestive problems as well that made me bloated and uncomfortable which isn’t fun while you’re also pregnant.

So, here’s all you do…  Get a glass of room temperature water, about 1 cup.  Put in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with the mother into the glass of water (I prefer to use organic), and put in 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. The drink will foam at this point so make sure there is enough room at the top for the foam to form. Then stir and drink. Some people have a hard time drinking vinegar. I like the taste of it and have no problem drinking it at all. My friend who told me about this trick has a hard time drinking vinegar, so she puts in some honey with her drink.

I started doing this method for 2 weeks and I would take it once a day about an hour after dinner and then I sat up for an hour or more and then went to bed.  The apple cider vinegar drink made the acid go away so I could sleep and after 2 weeks of taking it religiously, I found if I missed a day, it didn’t matter, I was still acid free.  I feel like there are other bonuses to drinking this concoction…  I have felt like I have more energy, my skin and hair look nicer, and I am in a better mood.  Of course, I can’t say this is all just from drinking apple cider vinegar for 2 weeks, but I have never felt so good during a pregnancy (and this is my 5th pregnancy!).  All I know, is something’s working and I want to keep doing it!

Here’s the recipe in an easy to read way

1 cup room temperature water
2 T. Apple cider vinegar with the mother (very important to have the mother)
1/4 tsp. baking SODA
1/2 tsp. honey (optional)

Please talk to your doctor or midwife before starting anything like this drink during pregnancy.  It should be very safe, but just make sure for your situation. I noticed later that my midwife, Richelle Jolly, had this apple cider vinegar suggestion on the information sheet she gave me at my first visit.  She’s so great!

  1. Hi Rachel, do you have bad breath when you are having acid reflux? I am not pregnant, but i have acid reflux issue, and is having a headache about it. But i have acid reflux more when i gained weight and although i don;t look fat, my tummy is huge due to improper habit of sleeping straight after heavy meal.
    Does it still work now?

    1. Luckily I didn’t have bad breath. Yep, it still works even when not pregnant, so give it a try!
